Every semester, women walk into college science, technology, engineering and math courses and are the only female in the room.

“You can imagine if you are the only one in the room who looks like you, you might think you’ve made a mistake,” said Jennifer Nielson, the associate dean in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Brigham Young University in Provo.

Far fewer women than men take STEM courses at universities, and even fewer will graduate with a STEM degree. About 40 percent of women who start STEM degrees will switch their majors before they graduate, according to Cydni Tetro, the founder and president of the Women Tech Council.

Design Your Future event coming Nov. 30

The Women Tech Council is hosting its Design Your Future event back by popular demand at 4 p.m. Nov. 30, at Adobe in Lehi, 3900 Adobe Way.

The event will feature Donna Morris, executive vice president of customer and employee experience at Adobe, and Aaron Skonnard, CEO of Pluralsight. Morris leads the product, customer service, and technical support experience for all Adobe products, in addition to all aspects of human resources and the workplace. Skonnard co-founded Pluralsight in 2004 and has since grown the company to more than 600 employees and 1,500 expert authors.

The Women Tech Council recently launched the Student Innovators program, also known as WTCSI, to increase the number of women in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM fields and careers. The goal of the Student Innovators program is to help more women complete STEM degrees by integrating students within the industry, provide visibility and leadership opportunities, facilitate mentoring experiences and increase access to workforce pathways.
