Utah tech companies pledge to increase number of women in leadership positions

SALT LAKE CITY — Big players in the Utah tech scene have committed to increasing the number of women in leadership positions by including at least one qualified female candidate in the interview process for every open position, vice president or above, according to a Silicon Slopes news release.

Utah tech companies Qualtrics, Domo, Pluralsight and InsideSales have all shared their support for the initiative, called the “ParityPledge.” National companies, including Cisco, Ralph Lauren and Lyft have also voiced their commitment.

There are no quotas or deadlines for companies that take the pledge, they simply have to include at least one woman in the interview process.

Talent Shortage Rooted in Education, Say Tech Industry Experts

Salt Lake City—Here’s a statistic to chew on: looking at the current pipeline of students, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that by 2020, an estimated one million computer programming jobs in the U.S. will not be filled. The tech talent shortage isn’t a Utah problem, it’s a national problem—and its roots are dug deeply into our education system.

A group of over 15 technology entrepreneurs and executives met at Utah Business’ annual technology roundtable Tuesday morning at Holland & Hart, discussing topics ranging from […]

In June, Susan Ho and Leiti Hsu, the co-founders of Journy, spoke out about sexual harassment by a prominent Silicon Valley VC–an action that resulted in his resignation. It also spurred a series of women to come out publicly about sexism, many reporting similar harassment experiences, particularly in the technology segment where women are woefully underrepresented and the power structure, in many cases, is skewed.

In a recent interview conducted by Lisa Wang, co-founder of SheWorx, Ho and Hsu related their discouragement that the conversation surrounding their company now included rhetoric about discrimination, in lieu of a […]
